What Is Green Roofing?
A green roof is considered to be a roof typically made of post-consumer or post-industrial recycled materials, and is also made with techniques that are as low impact to the environment as possible, minimizing depletion of ozone or creation of greenhouse gases.
Green roofing comes in various forms, such as reflective roofing, Re-cover roofing, and solar roofing.
Reflective roof coatings are products applied to roofs to reduce solar heat, and they can reduce surface temperatures by up to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, often resulting in a savings on minimum 25% in customer’s energy usage. These coatings work similarly to mirrors, reflecting radiant energy back into space. Installing reflective roofing can offset 50% of the cost of the roof install in the first 15 years.
Roof Re-covering adds extra protection to your roofing, reduces landfill waste and increases your energy efficiency, and can also save money as some existing materials such as insulation might not need to be replaced.
Solar roofing allows you to produce your own electricity, frequently producing enough output to power an entire house, thus decreasing energy costs, often by at least 30% – and you’re doing something great for the environment by reducing your environmental footprint.
Another definition of a green roof is a garden roof. Garden roofing improves underlying structure and can double your roof life, while saving you on an average 15% on your energy bills! While this choice can be more expensive initially, the savings long term are beneficial as the plants may reduce the overall heat absorption in the building, as well as reducing rain runoff and you are benefiting the environment by adding another source of clean air.
